About the Award
The University of Michigan Retirees Association created the Patricia Butler Distinguished Volunteer Award to honor Patricia (Pat) for her years of exceptional service as she retires from the Board in December 2023.
This award recognizes an individual for exceptional service to UMRA members specifically, and U-M retirees in general. Pat’s efforts, on behalf of UMRA, have been instrumental in elevating UMRA’s presence throughout the U-M community. For over 24 years, 5 years as President of the Board of Directors, she tirelessly worked to make UMRA a jewel for U-M retirees emphasizing advocacy, social connections, and just plain fun.
Each year the Association’s board may recognize an UMRA member who exemplifies Pat’s standards, values and energy for presentation at a fall member meeting.

Jim Randolph
The recipient of the 2026 Butler Distinguished Volunteer Award is Jim Randolph. Jim is an outstanding example of the many ways an individual can make a difference through volunteer commitment. In accepting the award, Jim made inspiring comments acknowledging the meaningful impact, tremendous satisfaction and sense of purpose which result when a person finds the right volunteer opportunities. He encouraged fellow retirees to say “yes” when volunteer opportunities arise.
Jim has maintained a lifelong connection to the University of Michigan. After earning a bachelor’s degree in economics, he devoted 39 years to the university, primarily serving as a liaison to the National Institutes of Health. In retirement, he redirected his talents toward community engagement, and the impact has been remarkable.
A UMRA member for 16 years, Jim has served much of that time as board secretary, bringing institutional knowledge and thoughtful leadership to the organization. As UMRA’s parliamentarian, he has guided governance with clarity and care, including leading the review and update of the association’s bylaws. As chair of the nominating committee, he has helped cultivate future leadership.
Jim also created the Retire & Thrive series, offering practical guidance on the nonfinancial aspects of retirement and helping countless retirees find purpose and connection beyond their careers.
His service extends far beyond UMRA. In Chelsea, Jim has supported Camp GABIKA, the ROAM transportation program for older adults, community diaper drives and numerous Kiwanis projects. As chair of the Chelsea Senior Center board, he established the Trinh Pifer Intergenerational Garden, creating a space that fosters connection across generations. He also helped found Chelsea Community Senior Services, expanding resources that help older adults remain in their homes with dignity and support.
Jim continues to serve through the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea, the 5 Healthy Towns Chelsea Community Wellness Coalition, Dementia Friendly Chelsea and the board of Silver Maples of Chelsea. He even shares his love of woodworking by leading weekly pen-turning sessions for retirement community residents.
Named Chelsea Citizen of the Year in 2017, Jim Randolph is, in every sense, a man of service—generous with his time, thoughtful in his leadership and tireless in his commitment to others. He is richly deserving of the Dr. Patricia M. Butler Distinguished Volunteer Award.
