The Ann Arbor campus parking permit system is changing effective July 1, 2025. The new virtual parking permit system using License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology will replace the current physical permits for everyone, including retirees.
The U-M Logistics, Transportation and Parking (LTP) FAQ page answers many questions and includes information on changes to everyone’s parking privileges such as event parking. UMRA appreciates the addition of the retiree FAQ section at our suggestion.
Those utilizing retiree parking permits may sign up for the new virtual permits and register their license plates beginning May 1 on the AIMs virtual permit management system. Existing Ann Arbor retiree permit holders may have already received an LTP email with detailed instructions on converting to the new system.
The free virtual Retiree After-Hours Blue permit will not expire and existing hang tags will no longer be used as of July 1.To continue to park in structures that have MCard swipe entry, retirees will use the MCard access (where available) until the license plate transition is complete in all AVI lots, approximately fall 2026.
The annual department-approved virtual Retiree Blue and Gold permits will be the same cost as the faculty/staff versions for both annual and daily permits. AVI will still be used for access to the gated parking areas until the equipment in the drive lanes is upgraded, through Fall 2026, to support the new LPR technology. Keep your AVI if you plan on continuing to use gated parking areas until the change is complete.
