In 2021, Google announced a storage model change that involved no longer offering free, unlimited storage to accounts, including higher education institutions like the University of Michigan. As a result, this change requires storage limits to be placed on every account across the entire U-M domain. Information and Technology Services (ITS) has worked with Google to ensure U-M continues to benefit from their service offerings while staying in compliance with new storage limits.
All data in U-M Google is affected by the storage limits. This includes, but is not limited to, storage in Google Drive, Google Mail, Google Photos, and shared drives.
Important dates:
- August 1, 2023: Deadline for alumni and retirees to bring their storage under 15GB
- April 1, 2024: Deadline for faculty, staff, students, and sponsored affiliates to bring their storage under 250GB
Google, like Amazon and other cloud storage providers, have adopted storage limits and allow users to purchase additional storage. Google allows you to purchase 100gb of storage for $20/year.
